Vincent Van Gogh's depiction of the Caf? Terrace at Night was painted by the Dutch artist in 1888 while living in Arles. In this piece, Van Gogh's isolation in the small town in Southern France is reflected in the view he chose to paint: all the tables at the forefront are empty, while those farther away are alive with townspeople. Vincent Van Gogh brilliantly captures the starry night sky without using the colour black. The purples, violets and deep blues opposite the warm yellows and oranges of the brightened cafe terrace create a stark contrast of colour.
