Georgia O'Keeffe
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was one of America's most important artists. O'Keeffe often transformed flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes into abstract images.
By the 1920's O'Keeffe had already become extremely popular, but it was only in the following decade, when she moved to the American Southwest that she began painting her most renowned works. In these works, O’Keeffe brings together nature, fantasy and passion. In 1929, when O'Keeffe traveled to New Mexico, the area's distinctive landscapes and forms inspired her paintings. In the years to come, O’Keeffe had returned to New Mexico every year, and later moved there permanently. In the time she had spent in New Mexico, isolated in the desert, O’Keeffe had developed her unique painting style.
O’Keeffe’s realistic style was influenced by photography and in particular by the works of her husband, the renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
A mass of O’Keeffe’s work is displayed at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, located in Santa Fe
