About Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is perhaps one of the most famous and recognizable artists of all time.
The Dutch Impressionist had only turned to painting at the age of 27, after a short career as a teacher and serving as a missionary worker in an extremely poor area. The country life had left a great impression on the artist, and themed in many of his works. Van Gogh suffered from depression and was committed into mental institutes at different stages of his life. Some of his most famous works were painted near the end of his life, when he was battling with his mental illness. At 1890 Van Gogh put an end to his own life.
In his lifetime, Van Gogh received hardly any recognition from the art community, and had sold only one painting. His greatest supporter was his brother Theo, who supported him professionally mentally and financially.
Van Gogh’s expressive brush stokes and use of bright vivid colors were revolutionary for his time, and became a source of inspiration to many 20th century artists. Many of his works are considered to be masterpieces, and are valued at millions of pounds.
